Kitchen Makeover

Miscellaneous October 24th, 2007

I am currently reorganising this site to make it look better. In the meantime, there will be some temporary disruptions. This site should be optimised in the next 24 hours for a better viewing experience :)

Do you like the banner above? I’m thrilled to have designed my very first banner myself. Say you like it! It will thrill me further! LOL! :D

Update : Okay, I think the kitchen here looks fine now. Woohoo!

Old Cucumber Soup (Lao Wang Kwa)

Soup October 24th, 2007

lau wang kua soup

Old Cucumber Soup is a popularly available soup in Malaysia and Singapore - whether in Chinese homes or at eateries. Being an old cucumber, it is sold with a slightly thick and brown-coloured skin. Usually it is fatter than the young green coloured cucumbers which you get from the market. So, don’t go and buy some fresh cucumbers and leave it at home thinking that it will grow old that way. It doesn’t work that way.

Just like most other soup recipes on this site, Old Cucumber Soup is VERY easy to cook and tastes great when paired with other great tasting ingredients like dried cuttlefish, dried scallops and red dates. Just prepare the ingredients and put them into the pot. Give it a simmer over 2 to 3 hours and you’ll get a hearty soup to drink. You can eat the cucumber flesh, which will usually be very soft to the pulp but I usually only go for the soup.

Steamed Ladies Fingers with Superior Sauce

Vegetable October 22nd, 2007

steamed ladies fingers

Steamed Ladies Fingers (Okra) with Superior Sauce is a dish which can be attempted by anyone, even a beginner. The superior sauce is only a nice sounding name but it is in essence, a combination of light soya sauce and oyster sauce. This recipe takes approximately 3 minutes to cook and less than 10 minutes to prepare.

Some people dislike the “slimy” inner part of ladies fingers when it is stir-fried. When you steam it whole, you do not have to deal with the “slime” – which is just the natural juice from within the vegetable. I find this dish very healthy as it only involves cooking by way of steaming, though in preparation of the superior sauce, you do need to add in a little bit of garlic oil. As for the type of ladies fingers, choose the tender ones which are usually lighter green in colour.

Hochiak in the News

Miscellaneous October 22nd, 2007

mee rebus

I always read The Star newspaper and like any other day, one of my favourite pastimes would be to read the newspaper. A day is like incomplete if I do not read the newspaper. So, as I was flipping through the pages of The Star yesterday, I noticed a familiar picture. It is a picture of a plate of Mee Rebus which I took when I did a food review back in August. As I read further, I then realised that it was highlighting the post I did on Rosli’s Mee Rebus. A smile was brought to my face to see the article highlighting the Mee Rebus food review.

Thanks to Sangeetha of The Star for finding my food review newsworthy :D

To those of you who have just arrived at this site courtesy of The Star Online, Welcome!
